The Pros and Cons of Music

There are not too many people who do not enjoy some form of music. Whatever mood you are in there are many different sounds and styles that you can listen to. It is the perfect way to express emotion and has even become a common used source of therapy. Music is apart of most of lives even when we do not realize it. If we are not playing it from our smartphones, then we hear it on television, movies, athletic events, and even at department stores as you are shopping. Although music has a lot of positives effects in our lives there are also a few negative effects. Here are four of the positive effects of music on our health.



Music is key to keeping us fit. Whenever we are exercising music can be very motivational. It sometimes gives us that extra energy boost to finish the workout and makes it more enjoyable. Music can also improve your memory. It’s amazing how easy it can be for people to remember lyrics after just a few times listening but it can be very hard to memorize a speech. The rhythm and timing of the words on a catchy tune is what makes it easier to remember all the words said throughout the song. This is why children are taught things through music because they will pick up the words much faster and learn what they need to learn in a simpler form. The third way music is positive for our health is it helps express feelings that a lot of people can relate to. Artist often want their fans to feel a connection to their music. If they are emotionally attached then it will boast sales and the overall fan base. Many people go through a lot of ups and downs in life and music often times helps them get through because they can hear someone talk about everything they are going through. Music also helps develop a higher IQ for the people who know how to different musical instruments. The coordination it takes to play music helps develops a great IQ level they may not be produced without the particular skill learned.



The two negative effects begins with that fact that many people listen to music too loud. Wearing headphones, going to concerts, or even just riding in the car to work music is often played too loud hurting people’s ear dumbs and therefore causing health concerns for doctors. If you often listen to loud music it can damage the structure of your ear and lead to hearing loss later in life. Earbuds for example if used too often and in your ears for hours on hours it can affect your ears in a very negative way. Music can affect your driving for the worse if you are a careless driver as well. Many people sing along to music in their car for fun but it can be a pleasure as much as it can be dangerous. If you as a driver get distracted by the music and get into an accident the music becomes very negative because it is potentially putting your life at risk. Many parents don’t want their teenage children listing to music loud in the car so they can focus on driving safely. The third negative affect music can have is it can anxiety and depression. Some of music made throughout the United States is sad and can have negative messages because that’s what that particular artist is going through and they are expressing themselves. This type of music can affect people in the fact that sad music isn’t going to distract you from your problems but instead will most likely make you think about it even more. This causes anxiety in the mind and becomes overall negative for the individual. Overall music has a mostly positive impact on people lives and I believe the good outweighs the bad.
